What REALLY causes skin aging at the big picture level is that individual skin cells age and become “senescent”. So what causes skin cells to age and become senescent?
It has been known for many decades that most cells can only divide a limited number of times. This is known as the “Hayflick limit” (named after the scientist who discovered it). Scientists have since discovered the main reason for this limit is due to sections of DNA at the ends of our chromosomes (ends of our DNA) called telomeres.
Telomeres are sometimes described as being like the caps on shoelaces to keep the rest of the shoelace (the rest of our DNA) from fraying. This is partly true, but stacks of research evidence show that telomeres do more than just that. A LOT more.
Telomeres actually play key roles in gene regulation, and when telomeres get too short, cells stop expressing genes they should (“youth genes”), and start expressing genes they should not (“senescent genes”). The bad news here is that each time a cell divides those telomeres get a little shorter. So when a cell’s telomeres get too short, the cell becomes senescent. In a nutshell THIS is what causes the Hayflick limit and that “cellular dementia”. This is what causes skin aging.
Senescent skin cells are also what lead to all those obvious and undesirable signs of skin aging: wrinkles, sagging, dryness, dullness, and so on. And are also ultimately what make your skin feel lousy.
The GOOD GREAT news is that the human body can produce an enzyme that can make those telomeres longer again. And that makes those skin cells YOUNGER again. That enzyme is called telomerase. The not so great news is that in most cells, most of the time, the gene for telomerase is turned OFF. You see, nature doesn’t care if you get old, wrinkled, saggy, and frail. Nature only cares that you have offspring and pass on your genes (before all those bad things happen). So keeping telomerase turned on in cells is a waste of energy – like running the heater in the summer. So our skin cells age − UNTIL NOW!
